Has this ever happened to you? You’re driving along just minding your own business and you notice your vehicle’s ABS light has come on. You make a mental note and keep driving. A few minutes later you look back at the instrument panel and the ABS light has turned off. Repeat cycle. So why does the ABS light go on and off? There could be a few reasons.
How does ABS work?
ABS or anti-lock braking system uses a wheel sensor to monitor the speed of your vehicle’s wheels. The information that is gathered is sent to the ABS computer in order to prevent the brakes from locking up in the event of an emergency stop. A failing sensor will often illuminate the warning light on the dashboard. Either your vehicle’s ABS sensor is dirty from road debris or it is legitimately malfunctioning.
Where are ABS sensors located?
These circular sensors are actually in each wheel hub. Most vehicles have a four channel ABS system in order to gauge the speed of all wheels. In some rear-wheel drive vehicles, there may be a sensor in the rear differential.
How to clean ABS sensors?
Either way it’s best to take your vehicle to the repair shop for a closer look. Sure, you could do this yourself, but we recommend letting your mechanic do the inspection. Not only do you have to take the wheel off in order to see the sensor, you need the tools to do it safely. Instead, why not bring your vehicle to the Matt Castrucci Nissan Service Department?
