When is Father’s Day 2015 and what is the history of Father’s Day?
Parents make the world go round, that is certain. Without them, well, we wouldn’t be here. When is Father’s Day 2015 and what is the history of Father’s Day? The special day falls on Sunday, June 21, and the history of the holiday is pretty inspiring.
According to history.com, Father’s Day in the United States was formed in the same vein of Mother’s Day: to honor parents. But, the idea didn’t quite take off right away. Maybe because most mothers and fathers are so different. If you give most dads a fragrant bouquet they may not know what to do with it. Mom, on the other hand, will likely get a big smile and jump for joy with enthusiasm. Everyone is different, but there’s a different level of sentimentality associated with Mother’s Day.
The idea of a day dedicated to dads got some traction in the United States at a West Virginia church on July 5, 1908, with a special service to honor fathers, according to history.com. It wasn’t until the next year that Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, started to push for a Mother’s Day equivalent for fathers. History.com records that Sonora Smart Dodd was one of six children raised by a widower and was so passionate about the idea of Father’s Day she went from businesses to churches to gain community support. Her enthusiasm must have been quite contagious because the state of Washington celebrated the first Father’s Day on July 19, 1910.
The Society for the Confluence of Festivals in India has a very different take on the holiday. In fact, the SCFI suggests the holiday could be much older and could date back as early as the age of the kingdom of Babylon. There are many theories on how Father’s Day came into observance. What we do know is President Wilson observed the holiday in 1916 and then in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge officially asked states to start observing the new holiday.
