Spring ahead: Clocks change March 8

When is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight Saving Time is upon us again and on March 8 we will set the clocks ahead one hour. While we lose an hour of sleep, Daylight Saving Time is an indicator that the days are getting longer and that means spring is on its way. Most clocks are automatic and will update on their own, but be sure to change the clocks that aren’t. Clocks in microwaves, car dashboards and ovens are some of the time-telling devices most likely to need a manual update. While we’re talking about it, here are some little known facts about when and what Daylight Saving Time is.

What is Daylight Saving Time and why do we observe it?

By observing the event you “save time” by correlating your clock with the shortening or lengthening of days, depending on the time of the year. The main reason we observe the event is it actually helps save energy. The amount of energy we use a day is really dependent on when we wake and when we go to bed. When you go to bed earlier or later in correlation with the longer or shorter days, the idea is you save energy and make better use of the daylight.

When do we observe Daylight Saving Time?

In spring the event is observed on the second Sunday in March at 2 a.m. and in fall its observed the first Sunday in November at 2 a.m. You don’t have to change your clock at 2 a.m., but that’s when the event “officially” takes place.

Who observes Daylight Savings Time?

Actually not all countries observe the event. Over 70 countries worldwide observe Daylight Saving Time and those places are mainly the U.S., Canada and Europe, but there are exceptions throughout the world.

We hope this provides a little additional insight into the event. If anything, it’s a positive reminder that spring is nearly here!
