Should I buy a dash cam?

When a car accident happens it’s often a game of he said, she said. Witnesses and bystanders aren’t always much help either. But what if there was a way to record the whole thing on video? Welcome to the dash cam. It’s helping drivers solve this very problem, but the question is how effectively is it really doing so? More importantly, you might be asking, “Should I buy a dash cam?

Today there are hundreds of systems, smartphone apps and cameras for recording your daily drive. Truly, there are plenty of options when it comes to finding a dash cam in your budget. The other upside is you have video footage of every drive in your car. From the mundane to capturing the crazy driving habits of the person in front of you, it’s nice to have proof of your experience. It’s always better to be safe than sorry and have video of something that you end up not needing.

That’s pretty much where the solid positives end. You see just because one has a dash cam doesn’t mean that footage could be used in a court of law. Every accident and court is so different, it’s impossible to say if video would be of any help to you in a lawsuit. In addition, most dash cams only have one view: straight ahead. This means the video really only shows one side of the story.

That’s not all. If you live in the U.S. and own a dash cam it’s unlikely that your insurance company will give you any sort of discount. Most U.S. insurance companies see dash cams as technology that does nothing to prevent an accident and, thus, can’t justify any discount for having it. This is very different from insurance companies in the U.K. that are starting to give discounts for having the tech.

So is it worth it to buy a dash cam? It’s all really personal preference. While it’s also good to be safe than sorry, there is no guarantee that having the technology will pay off.
