Tips for talking down the price of a car
Know the car’s worth
It’s always important to do your research when buying a car, but that’s especially critical if you want to talk the price down. Enter all of the info you have on the car into the Kelley Blue Book system and get a valuation estimate. Use this as a guide when you start talking.
Be firm, don’t ‘negotiate’
Okay, so this directly contradicts the title of the page. What we mean by this is to tell the salesperson what your terms are rather than ask about what they can do. Politely decline any counter-offers until they get to your number. If they don’t simply give them your phone number and ask them to call you when they’re ready to talk about your price. This is a risk, but it’s a hardball play that could force their hand.
Don’t settle
If the salespeople aren’t budging and just won’t get down to your price, it’s okay to walk away. There are plenty of cars to choose from that will be closer to your budget. Don’t settle just because it’s easier. Be firm but polite in telling the salesperson that you appreciate their time but would like to look elsewhere.
