The 2015 Nissan Murano recently showed off its innovative safety technology in crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) only to be recognized as a top performer. In a new round of small-overlap front crash tests conducted by the IIHS seven popular SUVs and crossover vehicles were tested, but the results were mixed, the IIHS reported. The 2015 Nissan Murano IIHS crash tests were exceptional and the crossover SUV performed the best.
In fact, the 2015 Nissan Murano earned the highest rating on a scale of “good” (the best) to “poor” and the IIHS’ highest award: Top Safety Pick+. According to the IIHS, “It hit all the marks for ideal small overlap protection.” Frontal protection in vehicles is important because a crash from the front is the most common crash that results in fatalities. The IIHS issues a moderate and small overlap front tests to measure a vehicle’s amount of protection in these type of crashes.
The small overlap front test recreates how the vehicle would react in the event the front corner of the vehicle strikes an object, such as a light post or tree. The rating a vehicle receives for the test depends on a variety of factors including structural performance, injury measures and the dummy’s movement during the event.
In addition to the small and moderate overlap front tests, the IIHS also conducts side, roof strength and head restraints and seats tests. Not only did the 2015 Nissan Murano receive the highest rating in all of those tests, it also earned a “superior” rating in front crash prevention when equipped with optional forward emergency braking, forward collision warning (included in the optional technology package).
