How to get better fuel economy in the winter
Winter driving can be a pain and when you need to run errands or travel through poor winter road conditions the last thing many of us think out is fuel economy. Great fuel economy is one of the main reasons many people pick out their vehicles, but the harsh winter weather can take a toll. Get your vehicle’s fuel economy back up where they should be with these simple tips to get better fuel economy in winter.
#1 – Combine trips
When your vehicle’s engine warms up to its optimal temperature and stays at that temperature consistently, fuel economy improves. When the engine is only run for short periods of time, the engine can’t reach that optimal temperature. The more trips can be combined the better.
#2 – Don’t warm-up your vehicle
Most manufacturers recommend that vehicles only need 30 seconds for the engine to warm up and the best way that happens is by driving, not by sitting idly.
#3 – Check your tire pressure
Fuel economy is maximized when the treads of your vehicle’s tires make a solid connection the road. When tire pressure isn’t sufficient, the treads can’t grip the road properly, which leads to slipping and more energy must be put into establishing a connection with the road. When tire pressure stays consistent so do your fuel economy numbers.
#4 – Park out of the cold (if possible)
When you can, park your vehicle in a warm place or away from the wind. This will help increase the temperature of your vehicle’s engine and interior.
#5 – Prepare for winter
It’s never too late to remove bike or roof racks or other unnecessary equipment from your vehicle to improve fuel economy. Every little bit helps.
