What kind of gas mileage and range will the new Nissan Armada get?
Nissan debuted the new 2017 Armada full-size SUV this week at the Chicago Auto Show. We were there to snap a couple of photos and learn more about the new truck, which is scheduled to arrive this summer. While Nissan told us all about its new 5.6-liter Endurance V8, they are keeping the mpg figures a secret for now. We decided to do a little detective work and estimate what the new Armada’s fuel economy and range will be.

2017 Nissan Armada vs 2016 Infiniti QX80
The Nissan Armada is the more affordable version of its big brother, the Infiniti QX80. Because the Armada sheds a few of the Infiniti’s luxury amenities, it comes in at about 100-300 pounds lighter than the QX80, depending on whether it’s equipped with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Both SUVs have the same 5.6-liter Endurance V8, although the Infiniti’s is tweaked to produce just a bit more horsepower and torque than the Nissan’s. Since we know that the QX80 gets up to 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, has the same engine and weighs 100-300 pounds more, we can confidently estimate that the new Armada will get at least the same fuel economy, maybe even a little more. In the table above, we’ve jotted down our conservative estimates. Long story short, the new Armada will provide way more power while saving you money (if gas prices ever start to rise again).
How does the 2017 Nissan Armada produce more power AND better fuel economy?
The upgraded Endurance V8 in the 2017 Armada has all kinds of new technology to squeeze a lot more power and efficiency from the same displacement engine. The new engine has a direct-injection fuel system that improves fuel economy and emissions. Also improving efficiency and performance is an increase in the compression ratio from 9.8:1 to 11.2:1 and swapping the traditional thermostat for a multi-control valve. Boosting the performance is Nissan’s variable valve timing and lift technology. The electronically controlled valves not only add lots of power, but also give much better throttle response. All of this combined with the new 7-speed transmission that replaces the old 5-speed should make the Armada a real beast.
